Innovation Insights

Developing innovations is our responsibility.

Home is where we can finally relax, put up our feet and tank up on energy again. If only there weren’t all the daily tasks that have to be done in addition to everything else: cooking, doing the dishes, washing and drying the laundry, ironing, vacuuming – valuable time that could be put to better use with the right support.

Innovations for getting more out of life

It’s great when home appliances do what they should: cool, heat, wash, dry and do other chores. It’s even better when they do more, such as protect the environment, save valuable resources, communicate with each other and automatically complete their tasks – as is already the case in smart homes. At BSH, consumers are our key priority. We develop innovations that simplify life, and satisfy needs that go beyond that. Ultimately, responsibility to our customers is what drives us. Just like our own goal of always being first when it comes to the products of our brands.

One system, numerous possibilities – Home Connect.

A stressful working day finally draws to a close. Time to head home for dinner and then sit back and relax. If only you didn’t have to go shopping first, set the mood at home by switching on ambient lighting, wait for the heating to reach a comfortable temperature, and prepare food on the stove.

Save time and energy – child's play

Getting home is now becoming faster and better. With Home Connect we offer our consumers a digital platform that makes everyday life much easier: smart home appliances that can be controlled instantly from a smart phone via a single app – even if the appliances don’t all belong to the same brand. For example, you can take a look in the fridge without being at home, control the dishwasher remotely, switch on the oven before you get home, or “order” an aromatic cappuccino to greet you when you arrive. Consumers therefore not only benefit from convenient operation, but can also strategically save energy costs. The fully connected kitchen is already a reality, offering a variety of opportunities that are far from being exhausted.

That’s because, apart from the option of controlling your own appliances, Home Connect also offers more and more services from different partners. For consumers this means that connected home appliances can also be controlled from other apps, or that various additional online services can be used. The smart home becomes reality.

External developers can also be actively and creatively involved in continuously expanding the Home Connect digital ecosystem using a Software Development Kit (SDK).

Home Connect – safe and secure

Digital progress in the home not only demands top-class technologies and innovations, but also the best security. BSH therefore attaches great importance to developing secure solutions to protect the home against unauthorized access. That’s why is has also had the Home Connect system tested by IT security experts. The final version of the app was tested by TÜV Trust IT and awarded the distinction of “Trusted App”.

The journey continues with open innovation

We are focusing on the concept of open innovation so that we can provide added value for our customers even faster in the area of the digital future. We can combine internal know-how with the expertise of external companies and developers and develop advanced solutions for consumers. Exciting projects that you simply need to learn more about.

Mykie – your personal kitchen assistant.

After an action-packed day we often yearn for quality time in our cozy home. Our home is important for recharging our batteries for the next day.

The only drawback is when cooking, cleaning and washing feel like unattractive household chores. Imagine what it would be like if these chores suddenly felt easy thanks to the support of a personal kitchen assistant. And what’s more, your personal kitchen assistant connects you, inspires you and offers you a simple way to learn something new:

Mykie (short for “My kitchen elf”) is a concept for a personal kitchen assistant.

Mykie – a new home experience

Mykie was launched as a concept at IFA 2016 with the aim of openly listening to whether this idea and scope might be interesting appealing for our consumers, and whether it would be interesting to pursue it further. Mykie, a Home Connect concept, is a smart companion that communicates with you with its face, voice, projection, display and a changing color ring.

Would you like to learn something new in a simple way? Mykie will help you.

Mykie can inspire you to cook or bake recipes based on the ingredients you have at home. If you’ve run out of something, he helps you place an online order at your nearest delivery store. Feel free to learn new tips and tricks on how to better prepare or simply relax with ease of mind and let Mykie help you with step-by-step video recipe guidance. While your hands are sticky from cutting onions, you can talk with Mykie and he follows your demands and offers additional information, e. g. displays the weather forecast. Once you’re done with the cooking, it’s intuitive for you to find a suitable dishwasher program and start your robot vacuum cleaner. Mykie can even provide information about stock market prices or play tunes.

Whether you’re at home or out, Mykie will connect you. Mykie is part of the Home Connect ecosystem, which means you have both simplified operation of Home Connect appliances and can also access services from partners that offer their solution on the open Home Connect platform.

As a robot with a friendly and helping personality, Mykie can enrich your daily life and bring a lighthearted approach to household chores.

IFTTT – offering the very best solutions for the Internet of Things.

Imagine if the lights in your living room blinked every time your washing cycle ended? This and many other creative solutions have been made possible with IFTTT.

IFTTT, or If This Then That, is an official Home Connect partner. It’s a service that allows the consumer to connect and control their Home Connect appliances within their own personal Internet of Things. The name – If This Then That – refers to the fact that IFTTT enables the consumer to use an applet to trigger a certain response from their appliances if something specific happens, with ‘this’ being the trigger and ‘that’ being the reaction. For example, every time the Home Connect washing machine finishes a cycle it’s logged on a spreadsheet so that over time consumers can calculate their energy savings.

This is just one of the countless personalized applets available. IFTTT offers an attractive Internet of Things service that is accessible globally on iOS, Android and the website, and has a huge array of really exciting partners on board.

More than 500 IFTTT services are currently available! Home Connect also offers many different services. Many more have been created and shared by other users, but there is no limit to creativity. An example at BSH: You can use IFTTT to tell your Home Connect oven to switch itself off as soon as you leave the house, or connect your Nest smoke alarm with your oven so that the oven will be switched off if the alarm goes off.
